I love when I am able to support a student alongside their classroom teacher and give the extra support they need to find success. It’s much easier to slow down and focus on areas where a student needs extra time in a one-on-one setting. It’s also a great exercise (for both tutor and student) in patience, persistence, and learning & communication styles!”

“Individualized person-to-person conversation and guided practice is the traditional (pre-industrial) approach to teaching and learning, and it is still the best approach. Despite their greatest efforts, schoolteachers (and textbook writers) are obliged to talk at students – not so much to them, and very rarely (if ever) with them. This mode of communication doesn’t work well for most people. I love tutoring because I can effectively promote students’ active engagement with the difficult stuff that is really worth learning!”
Van Tha Bik has a degree in applied physics from UW. He previously worked as a student assistant/tutor for Upward Bound, and has physics research experience. He is available to tutor Algebra I & II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Computer Science, and Physics.
“I love to see the ‘AHA’ moments when students are connecting with the material – not just because they got the right answer, but because they truly understand the concepts and steps necessary to get there. I invite students to watch, learn, practice and reflect on the lesson. I like to go over what was easy wand what was difficult, working together through the tough spots and giving lots of encouragement and positive feedback. The one-on-one or small group environment lends itself nicely to personalized tutoring and support. I enjoy getting to know each student while customizing the lessons and helping them apply what they’ve just learned.“
